George Curry began his outstanding football career as an all-around athlete at Larksville High School (1958 to 1961) having played football, basketball, and baseball. He was an All-Scholastic lineman, UP All-State center/linebacker, and named to the Prep Magazine High School All-American team in 1961. He received a full schol-arship to Temple University in 1962, where he was a three-year letterman, having started at nose-guard his junior and senior years. He remained at Temple University as the freshman line coach in the spring of 1967; thus he began an illustrious coaching career. George became head coach at Lake Lehman High School in 1967, and stayed through 1970 compiling an outstanding 24-13-1 record. In 1971 he moved to Berwick, where he is presently coaching, and has compiled an enviable 193-46-3 record, making Curry the winningest football coach in the history of Luzerne County (216 wins-59 losses-4 ties). Curry’s accomplish-ments put Berwick on the map not only locally, but also state-wide and nationally. He has won 10 championships; has had six undefeated regular seasons; had a 47-game regular season winning streak from 1981 to 1985; he has presently won 33 straight Eastern Conference games; and he hasn’t lost a regular season game in the Wyoming Valley Conference since joining the league in 1987. Curry’s teams were ranked in USA Today seven of the last ten years; his 1983 team won the mythical National Championship; 18 of Curry’s teams were ranked in the Top 20 in the state polls. His teams were also in the PA State play-offs the past three years having won the State Title in 1988 with a perfect 15-0 record; he also established a coaching record by winning three straight Eastern Conference Championships (that’s a first). During Curry’s 20 years at Berwick, his teams held opponents to one TD or less in 134 of the 230 games he coached; he has 73 shut-outs at BHS. Curry is one of the seven active coaches in the state of PA to have won over 200 games; he reached that milestone (200 wins) in 22-1/2 years (quicker than any coach in PA). Curry was named Coach of the Year 18 times during his 24-year coaching career. Although his accomplishments are astonishing, Curry takes more pride in the fact that he has helped hundreds of boys obtain millions of dollars in scholarships. He also takes pride in the fact that 77% of his players who went away graduated from college. Curry is married to Jacqueline Deluca and they have four children: Christine, a senior at Temple University; Kelly, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh; Nadine, a junior at Berwick High School; and his son Cosmo, a recent graduate of The Citadel, and presently a teacher and assistant coach at Berwick High School. Cosmo was a former Big 33 fullback under his father in 1986. Curry is presently the Assistant to the Superintendent of Berwick Schools; he has a Master’s degree in administration and supervision.
